Exists to atone for the grave sin he commits simply by being who he is. Penitents have either low self-esteem or legitimate, traumatic past experiences, and feel compelled to “make up” for inflicting themselves upon the world.  Their redemption must be of the same magnitude as the transgression – the greater the crime, the greater the penance.
